Eye Movement Desensitis ation and Reprocessing - EMDR in Carrick on Shannon Co Leitrim and online by Video-link

Specialist Treatment for Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD across Ireland

We provide Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing - EMDR from our offices in Carrick on Shannon in the county of Leitrim and online using specially adapted video sessions.

Whilst the research demonstrates that EMDR can be effectively delivered using video sessions, where possible, we generally advise face-to-face treatment where possible due to the interpersonal nature and complexity of the process and the sensitivity of the issues that EMDR is designed to support.

Our face-to-face EMDR treatments are delivered using traditional therapist-centred methods and specialist EMDR technology specifically designed to provide a more  immersive experience.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), is an evidence-based psychological technique  originally developed to treat unresolved traumatic experiences and distressing memories.

EMDR works by supporting the mind and memory to reintegrate and make sense of past events, helping to normalise and gain closure to past traumatic experiences. Distressing feelings and fears associated with old memories can be reprocessed and new beliefs, emotions and behavioural reactions can be installed.

EMDR does not change or delete the traumatic or distressing experience, however it helps the mind to heal from the affects of the trauma by using a process called Adaptive Information Processing or AIP.

How EMDR Works

The EMDR process usually involves following bilateral eye movements, taps or sounds whilst simultaneously processing memories, images or feelings associated with the past traumatic event or situation. This helps to desensitise the memory associated with the trauma, so that a more adaptive way of recalling and experiencing the memory can be installed and strengthened. EMDR is normally delivered over eight integrated phases involving assessment, psychoeducation and grounding, identification of trauma memories and images, bilateral desensitisation, installation of adaptive appraisals, body scanning, closure and reappraisal of the original problem. EMDR is a highly effective psychological approach to processing distressing experiences. It helps to alter the effects of trauma on a relatively fast basis without repeatedly unpicking the nature of the trauma itself. The research evidence demonstrates that the changes are long-lasting and sustainable.

What EMDR is used to Treat?

EMDR was originally developed to support trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Alongside Trauma Focused Cognitive Therapy, EMDR is recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence as a treatment of choice for trauma-related problems and PTSD.

Over the last 40 years, EMDR research has demonstrated good clinical outcomes for a range of anxiety conditions and problems. EMDR is often deployed as a treatment for problems including anxiety, panic, OCD, depression, emotional dysregulation  and anger. EMDR is a very powerful therapeutic approach and should only be used by a qualified therapist who has completed the required advanced level accredited EMDR training. This training normally takes a minimum of 12 months to complete and is supported  by practical work and clinical supervision before qualification is granted.
